Overview

How we rebranded Vitavox – the British defence communications manufacturer supplying loudspeakers and intercom systems to the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet since 1931 – and built a product-focused website to strengthen their position in the global defence sector.

  • Project Details

    The challenge:

Vitavox had nearly a century of heritage in military and naval communications – their equipment has been standard issue on Royal Navy platforms since the Second World War, and today their loudspeakers are fitted to every Astute and Dreadnought class submarine in the fleet. But their digital presence told a different story. The brand was outdated, the website offered poor UI/UX with limited product information, and there was no mechanism to capture visitor enquiries. For a company whose products are trusted on international defence platforms and certified to MIL-STD and Def-Stan standards, the gap between reputation and online presence was significant.

The challenge was compounded by the nature of the audience. Defence procurement teams, naval architects, and platform integrators expect detailed technical specifications, clear product categorisation, and the kind of digital professionalism that signals a reliable, capable supplier. The existing site gave them none of that.

    The approach:

Freshly Brewed began with a thorough audit of the existing brand, website, and user experience. We surveyed customers and the internal team, and analysed website data to understand how their audience navigated and what they were looking for.

That analysis informed every decision that followed: a modernised brand identity that honoured Vitavox’s heritage while projecting confidence in a competitive defence market, a redesigned user journey built around product discovery, and a comprehensive product catalogue with detailed specifications for each product line – covering loudspeakers, microphones, headsets, intercom systems, and long-range tactical speakers. We created over 25 dedicated product pages, each structured to give procurement and engineering teams the technical detail they need to evaluate and specify Vitavox equipment.

The site was also designed to support Vitavox’s growing presence at industry events like DSEI, where they showcase new products including their RF4050 radio system and VITAC tactical headset. Freshly Brewed continues to support Vitavox on a retained basis as the brand evolves.

Arrow

Vitavox design, manufacture, and supply loudspeakers, microphones, headsets, and intercom systems for international army and naval platforms. Founded in 1931 by Leonard Young – an electrician and naval volunteer who recognised the critical importance of shipboard communications during his service – the company has operated continuously from the UK for over 90 years, making it one of Britain’s longest-running audio manufacturers.

During the Second World War, Vitavox supplied thousands of microphones and loudspeakers to the Royal Navy, with staff working around the clock to meet wartime demand. That relationship with the British military has endured ever since. Today, Vitavox’s compact submarine loudspeakers are standard issue on the Royal Navy’s Astute and Dreadnought class submarines, and the company supplies communication systems to the AJAX armoured fighting vehicle programme for the British Army. Their equipment is also deployed on the Australian ANZAC fleet, Canadian Navy Victoria Class submarines, and Romanian Navy vessels. All products are designed, tested, and certified to MIL-STD and Def-Stan standards.

Vitavox operates as a division of Secomak Ltd from their Hertfordshire manufacturing facility. The company was awarded the Gold Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) award by the Ministry of Defence in 2023 – the highest badge of honour for organisations supporting the Armed Forces community. Beyond defence, Vitavox maintains a parallel heritage in high-fidelity audio, with their horn-loaded loudspeaker designs – including the CN191, first produced in 1949 – still sought after by audiophiles worldwide.

Working with Brandon and the team at Freshly Brewed was a great experience, from the initial concepts of a new logo through to the development and publication of our revitalised website, the process has been incredibly valuable and we look forward to continuing the partnership”
